...except that we recently removed the concept of an invalid revision. 
Maybe we shouldn't have done that? :-)

(Or we could always return a valid revision that isn't what was asked 
for; *Number is expected to do this anyway i.e. give back a *Number but 
not necessarily the *Number asked for.)
