Yes it should be optional, because (as I noted previously) our version 
of p4d - which, I admit, is ancient and way overdue for an upgrade that 
isn't going to happen :-( - does not support it either. At any rate I 
don't think scripts can rely on it. It would be awesome if it could be 
added at runtime (depending on the p4d version) but as long as it can 
fail with an error message, that's fine with me.

Agreed, cleanup seems to be highly back-end-dependent.
