Turned out to be a misconfiguration on my part.

BTW, while running "make -f Makefile.cvs" I recently get:

[...]
*** Creating Makefile templates
SUBDIRS: variable `QEXTMDI_SUBDIR' is used but `QEXTMDI_SUBDIR' is undefined
