I use KDE 3.0 with a patched version of Kate. Just check out kdelibs
(KDE_3_BRANCH), configure it and build/install only the kate subdirectory.
If you like to experiment you can also add "nedit" to
kdevelop/parts/Makefile.am to enable the NEdit KTextEditor interface, so you
can use NEdit instead of kate.
