Does KMail Require (via Akanodi) A Google Account?

No, KMail doesn't require a Google account.

I can reproduce the problem with a @yahoo.com email address. It seems the Add 
Account wizard is broken, at least for yahoo email addresses.

As workaround you can add the account in KMail's configuration dialog. Add an 
identity for your yahoo email address, add an IMAP account 
(imap.mail.yahoo.com) as Receiving account and add an SMTP account 
(smtp.mail.yahoo.com) as Sending account.
