kmail (akonadi) with google mail

Hi,

am I just blind or is kmail unable to access gmail accounts?
When I create a new email account from within kmail I put in my gmail account, 
it creates an imap account in kmail, and pops open a browser with the usual 
"access permission" request from google/gmail... but the account never 
actually shows up as any kind of mail folder structure, and the access 
permission browser window shows up every time I start kmail.

I'm running Plasma 5.23.2, Frameworks 5.87.0 on openSUSE Tumbleweed here.

Any ideas?
