On the off-chance that it might trigger something with someone on this wonderful list 
concerning my long-standing problem (when checking, kmail shows new mail fine but 
also often shows already read email from a week or two ago), I note that when I try Jorg's 
suggestion, here is what I get:

*johwhi at wlcjon*:*~*$ ls .local/share/local-mail/ 
*2021-11-21*  *cur*  *drafts*  *inbox*  *new*  *outbox*  *sent-mail*  *templates* 
 *tmp*  *trash* 
*johwhi at wlcjon*:*~*$ ls .local/share/.local-mail.directory/
