Kmail 5.2.3 find messages

i am on another distro, Kubuntu 16.04 LTS using backports ppa so am on 
KMail 5.2.3, don't even ask what Plasmas me here and there but I think 
5.8 something. And I see exactly the same: mail search and contacts 
search is once again gone missing
