On my system the average size of email headers is around 3.2 kB [0], so 
depending on how many emails you have, 1 GB does not sound as an entirely 
unreasonable number. Plus there's additional metadata for each email stored in 
Akonadi (the so called envelope, avg size 620 bytes on my system), and of 
course  there's an overhead from the database itself - mostly indexes.

[0] You can measure it yourself by running the following SQL query in the 
Akonadi Console's "DB Console":

SELECT AVG(datasize) FROM parttable WHERE parttypeid = (SELECT id FROM 
parttypetable WHERE ns = 'PLD' AND name = 'HEAD')

The result is an average size of all "header" parts, in bytes.
