Addressbook Contacts enrties missing

Today I found that my addresssbook Contacts had shrunk from 
around 130 entries  to 27.

What on earth could have caused that?

N.B. Recently I had to do an 'akonadictl restart' to get filters 
working again..

(Fortunately I could restore from backup.)
