There's also `akonadictl vacuum` which is probably even more aggressive. If you really want to reduce the footprint of your local email cache, you could first configure your accounts not to keep local copies (you do that yourself for the email that's "worth it", in your own archive, right? ;)) and then vacuum the cache maintained by akonadi.
