It was mostly a scape goat though.
A uniform data access API was a really nice evolution, the central access
through a service basically a requirement.
The initial goal was to be able to serve the PIM needs of any application even
allow for third party developers to create specialized user interfaces.
I think Zanshin is the only example for the latter that has ever been released
but I might be missing some others.
It is of course understandable that having it simply as a private, internal
component makes the maintainability a lot easier, but as someone who is still
hooked to the initial idea it is still quite a sad change.
