When I looked at how Akonadi was accessing its MySQL database, I saw the 
fundamental problem:  1000's of unnecessary SQL calls.  As all the data 
was in cache, this manifested itself as high CPU utilization.  Rather 
than fixing the root-cause, some sort of caching mechanism was created 
to partially address the issue.  I don't recall the details but the 
thinking was Akonadi was going away so no point in investing any more 
energy to resolving root-issues.

It may be reasonable to move away from a MySQL (DBMS) backend as it 
makes it a bit more difficult for the field to troubleshoot issues.
