Hello René and Sandra ...
Thanks for both of your replies. I believe there has been some kind of
misunderstanding, judging from what you both suggested and/or implied. :)
Thus I am trying to clarify my problem, hopefully getting it across more
properly this time:
Like I said, I run a local Dovecot instance that is fed by fetchmail. Kmail2
connects via IMAP to that local Dovecot IMAP server and uses IMAP IDLE for the
regular Inbox and normal interval-based fetching on all the other folders that
I have since even Kmail2 can only do IMAP IDLE on one folder unfortunately.
The problematic and really nerve wracking thing that happens though is that
several times a day, randomly, I open a new mail and Kmail2 only shows its
standard "Retrieving Folder Contents" screen while it is syncing the whole
folder (cataloging it)... which takes ages naturally. This can rather easily
be triggered while going through a folder and moving mails to the trash mail
by mail. This will usually suddenly trigger such a sync as well.
This cannot be normal. Kmail2 is the only client connected to the folder(s),
so no changes really happen from the outside that could lead to it thinking
that the folder is somehow "dirty" and needs re-syncing. What does happen
though is that the sieve scripts I have in place move mails into their
appropriate folders -- and those naturally run in the context of Dovecot. But
that shouldn't trip up Kmail2.
No matter what, no IMAP client I have used ever behaved this way. Don't get me
wrong, I pretty much love the whole Kontact suite and Kmail2 (which is why I
switched from TB) and I honestly appreciate all the hard work that has been
poured into it. But this is really making it very hard to work if you have to
be afraid to open mails. :(
I hope I made my problem clearer. If there are any further questions, please
let me know and I will be happy to answer them.
Any help and/or suggestion would be very much appreciated, since this problem
is really slowly driving me insane.
Thanks so much,
Matthias
