Yes.  This has been messed up ever since akonadi.

I have it working OK by setting Compact frequency to 1 (one) message
and checking Enable file monitoring and Lock method None.  But I don't
access the mailbox with any other tools either.

Only very recently has it been that I do not have to use the mail(1)
command to manually delete messages that I deleted using Kmail.  That
was the last really bad bug.

One nit is left: after deleting the last message in
/var/spool/mail/$USER using Kmail, the preview window retains it.
Moving to another folder and coming back, it's really gone.  No big
deal, in light of how messed up this resource used to be.

    $ kmail --version
    Qt: 4.8.6
    KDE Development Platform: 4.14.2
    KMail: 4.14.2
