Well, in Gmail your mail gets moved to "archive" if you set it to
leave on server but they do not get deleted. And yes, you can delete
mail in Gmail too, it is just not the "preferred" gmail way.

and I have no problems with filtering in KMail, I have about 20 or so
filters that all work well?

A while ago I took the plunge and made a "clean" install meaning I
renamed my .kde and .local folders and then reinstalled the computer
(I use a separated / partition so that was the one to be reformatted)
and since I have had very few problems.

It is not "fun" to do this but if you have a user setup that is old
you might benefit from it.
