I can tell you that I sync daily my full home user directory in my laptop and
desktop using rsync. On both systems I have the same version (latest stable
version compiled from sources) and I would not try to experiment between major
KDE versions, 4.10.5 vs 4.11 may be a bad idea.

Beware also that if the database (eg. mysql, virtuoso) is running when
performing the sync you will likely ruin your setup. So I recommend

- Always sync having a backup. I, for instance use a pendrive that serves as
backup.

- Sync form the command line with your session closed and no running app. The
databases are the very big files that constantly change.

- Take into account that you will eventually make a mistake (sync from laptop
to desktop when you wanted desktop to laptop for instance) so, backup, backup
backup.

If you just want to sync the mails, maybe you can try to setup an imap server
on your desktop that can serve you as a point to share your mails between both
machines.
