This wouldn't be Mandriva, by any chance? My husband's computer requests his
password on bootup (reason immaterial to this discussion) but the dialog
doesn't show any input, and clearly the input is not being accepted. The next
time something requires it, the dialog works fine. It seems to be a distro
bug. I saw the same thing a long time ago in another Mandriva version, then
it was OK for some time, but now it's returned.
