well, the move to akonadi (and thus: using database driven information 
sources) is a long strory, which can be read up for most parts on kevin's 
blog: http://www.kdedevelopers.org/blog/83
which is, admitted, targeted mostly at developers.
as far as I understand, these are some reasons for akonadi development are:

-	enable multiple applications (such as kmail, korganizer etc.) to 
concurrently access the same data without the need to care for data integrity 
from the application itself.
-	de-couple the user applications (kmail) from the need to directly talk to 
the vast number of supported backends/servers (imap/pop3/groupware), which is 
hard to maintain, also implies code duplication in other apps having the same 
needs.

maybe there should also be an article on akonadi on userbase.kde.org :)
