I am having the same problem, and it's intermittent. For example, right now
I have changed an identity for a top-level folder ('inbox') of an IMAP account.
After closing and restarting kmail once, the identity setting was preserved.
At this point, I've made a copy of kmailrc. After closing and restarting again,
the identity on that folder was reset to 'Default'. The difference in config
file is below. Any idea what could be wrong?

(This happens on Kubuntu 9.10, and I can poke with a debugger given rough idea
where to look).
