Today at work I am running Ubuntu 9.10, and I just updated to KDE 4.4.00 (KDE 4.4.0) including Kmail 1.13.0 on Xfce 4.6.

I am using the same servers with the same setup and I am not suffering from the delays. Mails are sent immediately, even though this machine is much slower than my PC at home (therefore XFCE). The mail window does not go grey and Kontact is not stalled. Might really be a Fedora/Suse issue, then ... My version of the kdepim package is 4.4.0-0ubuntu1~karmic1~ppa2, Kwallet is also running.

I'll do some testing on this machine with SSL/TLS (and KDE4 instead of Xfce) this evening, and I'll keep you updated about the results.
