I suspect that the problem of the pictures not showing is down to the fact 
that it's a KMail feature, and KMail is not yet ported to Akonadi, so can't 
make full use of the addressbook's data.

For the Strigi problem, have you checked through each of the 
problems/solutions listed on http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi ?
