[kdepim-users] Archiving emails to external media

In case the solution with creating symlinks does not work, might creating copies 
of Kmail's mail folders on the USB drive and then syncing them via rsync with 
the original ones in your HOME directory be a solution? As you see I'm not an 
expert but this should do the job as well and there would be no reason for Kmail 
to complain about missing folders (if it even will do that anyway)
