Werner, my info may be out of date, but if I understand correctly, if you run
KDE apps under xfce or gnome, the KDE libs are loaded into memory in addition
to any gnome or xfce apps. So you get no performance benefit from running xfce
if you are are going to use KDE apps. In fact, you may be taxing your system
more than just running KDE.
Gnome vs. KDE is a matter of preference, but in my experience, people run xfce
because it is lighter weight. That's my gripe against xfce. You can't do
much with its native apps, (e.g. thunar won't browse smb shares) so you have
to use gnome or KDE apps. At that point you are running both KDE and xfce,
instead of just xfce, so you are actually working against your purpose.
That's the way it worked pre-KDE 4, I don't know if this still applies with
KDE 4.
