I'm pretty sure that it has nothing to do with moving to KDE4, for two 
reasons.  First, this laptop has both KDE3 and KDE4, and uses a remote 
calendar, so it's seeing the same file in both cases, and I don't have the 
problem.  Second, I have had the problem, more than once, when I have 
installed a new system.

The problem seems to have been a difference in the way that time zones have 
been set up on the original diary and the way they are set up on the newest 
install.  What I did was experiment with the time zone setting screen, 
changing to a wrong one, then back.  Everytime you set a time zone you are 
asked how you want it to handle existing appointments.  Play with that until 
you get it right.  It worked for me.  HTH
