I dont think you will be in much luck.
1st upstream knew about this (i reported it) and never acted on it;
2nd K/Ubuntu devs will not change anything like this on a stable release;
3rd a new snapshot (kde 4.2 beta2) is coming out, so everyone is over worked!

Better wait for the next release (jaunty), thats what i did... I missed that feature during all Hardy development and now that I upgraded to Jaunty development I have it back \o/ .
