I have over 65k (unread) emails from 12 accounts using [$du -chs .kde/share/apps/kmail/] 15GBis.
Other then a 2 or 3 crashs a day for the devel version (KDE: 4.1.73 (KDE 4.1.72 (KDE 4.2 >= 20081112)) KMail: 1.10.3) and a lot of RAM used, it works great to me.
