That seems unusual, Brian.  Which distro provided your kmail, and what version 
of kmail is it?

What do you see if you select Help > Kontact Handbook?  Did it give you the 
opportunity to build the index?

Other than that, ask any questions you need and we'll try to answer them.  It 
would help if you told us whether you have used email on other systems, so 
that we have an idea of what you already know.
