Peter, I'm on vacation at the moment and only have limited access.  I've not 
seen anyone else having this problem, so the best bet for helping you is for 
you to say which distro you are using, which version (distro, kde and kontact 
etc,),  With any luck someone will know if there is any oddity in your 
versions that could be the cause.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that if you experienced a crash of 
anything it could cause something to be left behind, orphaned, in /tmp.  
Running tmpwatch (or is it tempwatch?) might take care of that, if there is 
such a problem.
