As you have seen, the patch from Martin is from January 2008.

In the meantime I did a search on the bug-list, and, fwiw, I think 
the point is mentioned in 

     <http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159499>

Seems to be that synchronizing over imap does the same damage.
