Sorry, but my coffee isn't working this morning.  Are you referring to the
sidebar with the date navigator, to-do view, item viewer, and calendar manager?
 (For me it is on the left.)  If so, if you use the Settings » Sidebar menu to
uncheck those four items, the sidebar will disappear.

Also, for me the main toolbar (Settings » Toolbars Shown » Main) contains Back
and Forward buttons.  If yours doesn't, check Settings » Configure Toolbars...
