I think we all understand that kmail is not directly involved, other than
triggering akonadi to start a resource that was not previously running. 

You'll have to forgive my naiveté on this issue, because I've only been
designing and programming systems for 35 years, and it hadn't yet occurred to
me that one might actually design a system to initiate a daemon without a
thought about how to cleanly shut it down.
