After some research it seems to me that this is not akregator's fault. e.g. in
firefox you can get the expected behavior by setting
"browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" to "true".

The built-in browser's "open in background" issue I mentioned previously is
obviously a separate issue, unrelated to this bug report.
