Confirmed for openSUSE 12.3, kmail2 4.10.5.
Happens with maildirmixed resource.
The condition in comment#1 is not a requirement, it happens when kmail just
scans the directory  or otherwise keeps itself busy (which it does a lot on
mixed maildir/mbox folders).
The problem also occurs when using "update folder and subfolders" and when
modifying the resource in system settings->personal info->akonadi
