i've been having this problem with imap for years already. strace shows little
more than:

read(7, 0x251c604, 4096)                = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN},
{fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}, {fd=13,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN}], 8, 0) = 0 (Timeout)
