The same is truth for you're use case, just sort it on oldest mail first and
filter on unread mail, but The way most people use it, is to open up their mail
program, get any new mail, and have this new mail presented. MS Outlook works
this way, and I think it is a sane default.

Anyway, if the community is divided, the best thing to to is....make is an
option :-)
