Thank you for the answer. Actually it's been quite a long time so I do not
remember exactly. I do remember that in some cases when you switch to a
different folder in the listing you do not see any message or you see a wrong
list aof messages. In that case you have to deselect and select the folder
again.

Difficult to explain - sorry! 

The version is KMail 1.9.9 on KDE 3.5.10
