I can confirm this for trunk r860752. I tested it like this:
(1) select a mail in an online IMAP folder
(2) kill your kio_imap4
(3) KMail notifies you about kio_imap4 dieing
(4) select a different mail in the folder -> no mail is retrieved
(5) click on yet a different mail -> the mail is shown, things are back to
normal
