I have experienced the same as in Bug #63353 with Disconnected IMAP under Kmail 1.9.51 (KDE 4, 1st beta), *except* that I lost emails even if Kontact didn't crash (and if it crashes, Kmail deletes unread emails from the server! So there's no way to recover them). 

If you cannot reproduce it, I can provide you with an email account at my server; I don't know if it's an issue specific to my server-side IMAP software and Kmail.
