Just got bit by this on a current version of gentoo:
KDE 3.5.7, kontact 1.2.5 and kmail 1.9.7, compiled with gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.0.1).

I moved mail into a folder, renamed it via the Properties dialog. After I synchronized with the server, the folder was gone. Suspecting it wasn't subscribed, I checked the subscription dialog and enabled it. The folder appeard, but no mail. I double-checked on the server and the old folder had been indeed deleted and there was no mail in the new folder.
