PLEASE do not use e-mail for the bug comments, use bugzilla directly. Your signature and the original message clutter up the comments and makes them hard to read.

If your computer completely locks up, this can not be the sole fault of KMail. Regardless of how any appliaction misbehaves, the system should stay stable.
It is not even necessarily a bug in KMail that triggers the wrong behavior, maybe KMail just does something which all other apps do not do, but which is not wrong.

I still would like a screenshot of the statusbar.

BTW, I have seen vertical multicolored lines as well, but in my case, it was a bug in the NVIDIA driver when switching virtual terminals.
