	Thanks for thinking about this problem for me...
	I would tend to agree with you, except for the irrefutable evidence
which has presented itself... 
		1. I have loaded Debian Sarge on about 5 different computers
			a. None have had this problem
		2. This computer was behaving wonderfully, until I opened
KMail for the first time... after it began having this problem with the
status bars... also, if I don't use KMail the computer works great... when I
use KMail for too long it gets the lines and locks up... Evolution works
great with this computer though... this patterns leads me to believe that
there is something inherent in KMail that is causing the i810 video chipset
to have a cow...

Can you attach a screenshot of that? Although I think these lines are not
the fault of KMail, see below.

I doubt this is a KMail problem, I rather think you have problems with your
graphics driver or with X in general. 

Does this really not happen with any other applications?
