Which MLT / Kdenlive versions do you have? I recommend that you first 
uninstall all MLT and Kdenlive packages (libmlt*, melt*), then install 
Kdenlive using the sunab PPA repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kdenlive
