Indeed, it looks as if byte order in the pixel encoding is screwed up.

It happens with all formats I tested (DV/PAL, Xvid/avi, MPEG-2,
MPEG-4/h.264, motion jpeg), both with interlaced and progressive scan
video material.

No, it also happens when I define the project as 4:3 PAL and import 
4:3 PAL DV material. (In other words, the problem occurs with any video
material played back in kdenlive.)

Probably. I wasn't sure how to test it outside kdenlive, but at least
got different visual bugs when building MLT with xine support.
