Just to make sure you know it, you can capture a frame of the movie and 
add it automatically to your project with the "Export Frame" option from 
the "File" menu.

Extending the clip on transitions like you propose does not seem very 
easy to do. But I think I will try to add a "Freeze" video effect that 
allows to freeze a video clip at a certain frame. Would be very useful 
for sure.
