Kdenlive is completely seperate from the video processing side of things (Piave). You can safely hack away on kdenlive without knowledge of video processing... except that knowing a bit about video editing in general (what in/outpoints are) would be very useful :-)

Jean-Michel says right things. I need Kdenlive to edit any video source.

I can spend some time to Kdenlive development (about two or more hours 
per week), but I never work on video processing area before and I need 
someone to guide me.

I have some experience with Qt/KDE development.
