Thanks. From the website I see that I need either DV or AVI DV as the output
file. So that should mean the following would have been necessary, but it
ends in a segmentaton fault.

[simon at new test]$ transcode -i in.avi -V -y dv -o out.dv
transcode v0.6.12 (C) 2001-2003 Thomas Oestreich, 2003-2004 T. Bitterberg

[transcode] auto-probing source in.avi (ok)
[transcode] V: import format | MJPG RIFF data, AVI (V=ffmpeg|A=avi)
[transcode] V: import frame | 320x240 1.33:1
[transcode] V: bits/pixel | 1.562
[transcode] V: decoding fps,frc | 15.000,0
[transcode] V: Y'CbCr | YV12/I420
[transcode] A: import format | 0x1 PCM [11024, 8,1] 88 kbps
[transcode] A: export format | 0x55 MPEG layer-3 [11024, 8,1] 128 kbps

Segmentation fault

So I also had a go with mencoder:
[simon at new test]$ mencoder in.avi -ovc libdv -nosound -o out.dv

But this file could was 7x bigger than the original and anyway did not seem
playable by kdenlive.
So I'm still stuck... :-(
