hhmm ... I don't know how avid is handling this internally, but you can do all this with avid's capture cool ...

but then there will be (sometimes) a lot of unused footage remaining on harddisk, what should be avoided if possible IMHO ... although I know that harddisk capabilities are pretty cheap to purchase at the moment ;-)

just an example:
some time ago I had to capture footage from an old hi-8 camcorder having just one audio track (conversion to dv was done by an external analog2dv converter == dazzle hollywood bridge).
So why capturing an audio track with no sound?

ok, tape analysis is cool, but is also very stressful for the camcorder's hardware and sometimes veeery slow (I mean the tape positioning for example), because the response time is very high.
But maybe (hopefully!!) kdenlive will later on work with high-end professional hardware (digital betacam,...) as well ;-)

so normally __it's a litle bit contrary to my statement above, but this way I can do other things during this (sometimes looong) break ;-) __ I'm capturing the whole tape in one go and apply the automatic scene detection afterwards (movie dv), or __if the software has the ability to do this__ during capture process.

So, just another suggestion, why don't you guys install avid on your machines to check out some of this features? The editing-workflow is (most of time) PRETTY HANDY and maybe you will like it too!!!
Avid Free DV is available for download here:
