Ok. After it had been trimmed, would you want it to appear in the clip preview 
as *just* that section that you trimmed, or would you want the entire clip to 
appear with in/outpoints at the position you had set?

(I'll note on each point which broad category of development it fits into)

Well, there are two ways to look at this. The first is that text is an effect, 
but that does not help you much if you want, for example, a picture overlayed 
over part of the PIP - say, if you want to have a fancy border around the 
PIP.

The other way to look at it is that the PIP clip would be a composite clip 
containing both the text track and the video track. Then, both would be 
overlayed on the PIP correctly.

I'm not sure how to make this really easy to use yet, but I'll have a think 
about it.

This is all part of the seperation of video and audio, really.
