What do you mean by 'simple dv' ?
Because kino (dvgrab) offer three  possibilities -- AVI (type1 or type2) or raw dv -- to grab from dv cam using *.avi or *.dv extensions.

'shift in' ? ... do you mean 'wipe' ?

Will this cache be saved on hd too, when previewing another part of the video which also need to be prerendered?
So it could be re-used later again?
